Columns in the interior. Types, features, production on CNC machines.

In ancient times, columns served exclusively as a support (this was the main function of this architectural element), however, the decor was also of great importance. Indeed, already in antiquity, columns had beautiful “caps” richly decorated with stucco and tiered bases.

Nowadays, columns are more often installed specifically for decoration (and much less often for support).

What columns are appropriate in modern interiors? Where do they meet? What are they made of? Can they be produced on CNC machines? This is what we are talking about in today’s article.

A few facts from history:

Initially, the column was compared to the tree of life. The first stone columns appeared in Ancient Egypt. In Greece, Dorian, Ionian and Corinthian columns were distinguished.

During the Baroque era, twisted and spiral columns came into fashion.

Columns served as both an architectural and decorative element; monuments were often created in the form of columns and with a bust or sculpture on top.

The top of the column is called the capital. The bottom one is the base. Columns connected by arches are called an order arcade.

The body of the column is called frust. Often made with flutes (vertical grooves).

Application in our time:

Now columns can be made to decorate the exterior of a building, to decorate gazebos, porches, and to decorate entrance areas.

And also for interiors. And for furniture decoration.

Functionality of columns in interiors:

  • Columns visually pull the space upward, creating the feeling of higher ceilings,
  • They can hide something inside (mask pipes, wiring, etc.),
  • They zone the space well, divide it into functional zones without solid partitions,
  • Decorate and highlight the chosen interior style,
  • Can be installed for support, support floors,
  • In some cases, they are intended to decorate furniture, for example, they decorate niches in kitchen units, frame shelves, or serve as part of a bar table or kitchen corner.
  • Sometimes, right in the columns (usually if they are decorated not in a classical, but in a modern style) niches are made for books, souvenirs, and lamps.

Types of columns:

Cross-section: square, round, irregular shape.
Style: antique, modern, creative.
By material - concrete, wood, gypsum, polyurethane, metal, plasterboard.

Styles:

In classical styles, laconic, snow-white columns with elegant stucco molding look good. In this case, the columns are often arranged in pairs.

In oriental interiors, the column is an equally popular element. Two or three columns connected by pointed arches look good. Such columns are often decorated with oriental ornaments, Arabic script, and small designs that occupy most of the product.

In Art Deco or Baroque styles, classic antique columns will look good.

In other styles (including all modern ones), columns are appropriate, but they are usually extremely minimalist and are rarely decorated with carvings.

Features of placing columns in interiors:

Columns are more suitable for spacious rooms, because they are quite voluminous in size.
Massive columns should also be installed in rooms with high ceilings, large windows, and sufficient lighting. Only in this case will they decorate, complement the interior and make it more solemn, rather than cramped and gloomy.
In the kitchen-living room, columns will visually separate the kitchen area from the area for receiving guests.
Large marble columns are suitable for the bathroom. They must be moisture resistant. A bathtub decorated with columns will create a feeling of regal ambiance.
Columns in interior openings will not only add majesty to the room, but also visually divide the space, maintaining openness.
A popular solution is to decorate the column with Venetian plaster and marbled painting.
Furniture columns usually have small shapes.
