2d and 3d models for CNC, differences, features
Our website presents both 2D models and 3D models for CNC machines designed for different types of cutting.
In this article we will tell you how 2D milling differs from 3D milling. And we will show examples of our models.
Main differences:
A CNC machine is capable of giving a future part some form or decoration as a result of the action of a cutting element (there are laser machines, there are milling machines). Cutting can be three-dimensional or two-dimensional.
The main difference is that with 2D cutting the machine processes along two axes (x and y), and with 3D cutting along three axes (x, y, z).
Processing three-dimensional products is more difficult. But, thanks to the program control that modern machines are equipped with, the work is fast, ultra-precise and detailed.
Cutting Features:
When 2D cutting, a vector image (2D model) is used. The CNC machine operator loads the program and the CNC machine runs fully automatically.
With 3D cutting, everything is the same, only a 3D model of the future product or decor that needs to be produced is loaded into the program. The machine also cuts automatically.
Images (2D or 3D) are converted into G-code, which contains an algorithm for the operation of electric drives that control the movement of the machine spindle with the cutting tool.
In some cases, when it is necessary to cut products of complex shapes, for example, statues, figurines, curly legs of chairs and tables, balusters for stair railings, etc. a rotary axis is additionally installed. With this modification, it is possible to process the surface from all sides, continuously, without additional operations to rearrange the workpiece on the work table. In these situations, 3D models are used.
In both cases, a person usually only observes and controls the operation of the machine.
The device is capable of producing any number of products specified by the program. Provide serial production.
Purpose:
As we said above, 3D milling is necessary to create three-dimensional products with complex relief. Moreover, the final product or decor does not have to be voluminous on all sides. On one side the design can remain flat, while on the other it can be decorated with decor reminiscent of stucco molding and bas-reliefs. Carving is also popular, in which the pattern is “deepened”, as it were, and the surface of the material remains smooth. Or even - we use cut-out decor. That is, holes are created, and the remaining material forms silhouettes, lines and decorative elements.
The scope of application of 3D cutting is extremely wide; it can be used to produce:
- Beautiful furniture
- Volumetric panels
- Frames
- Panel
- Doors
- Overlay decor
- Partitions
- Icons with complex carved decoration
- Monuments and other products for funeral services
- And much more
- The products will be voluminous. The material is often chosen to be quite thick in thickness.
The same cannot be said about 2d models. The thread in this case will be surface or slotted. Products and parts will have only two height levels, the design will be flat. And the material most often is sheets of material of the correct shape.
The purpose of 2D models is less broad. With their help they create:
- Signs and outdoor advertising
- Souvenirs and numbers, tags,
- Furniture
- Wall panels
- And other products.

Materials:
All sheet materials, composite panels, soft metals, PVC, chipboard materials and other wood products (MDF, chipboard, laminated chipboard, fiberboard), plexiglass, and some types of wood are suitable for 2d milling.
For 3D milling, materials of varying strengths can be used. Including hard and heavy. Mostly this is hardwood (oak, beech, walnut, etc.), stone (including marble or granite), less often - composite, plexiglass, copper, bronze, aluminum.
Models:
Our website presents the following models for 2D cutting:
- 2d panels
- 2d furniture models
- 2d models baguette
- 2d models decor vertical
- 2d models decor horizontal
- 2d models central decor
