About iconostases, history:

The first iconostases appeared so long ago that it is no longer possible to say the exact date of their origin. It is known that even in the Byzantine era, partitions were used to separate the altar (a place for sacred actions) from the main part of the temple. And this was precisely the main purpose of the first iconostases.

Currently, the iconostasis is an obligatory part of any temple, which is a partition richly decorated with icons and beautiful carved decor.

Scientific research indicates that the first iconostases were significantly different from modern ones. They were a low lattice barrier that served to protect the clergy from the pressure of the crowd.

A little later, around the 6th century in Roman churches, iconostases began to be made in the form of a series of columns with statues or images of the apostles.

Later, stone altar barriers with royal gates appeared.

Another version of the most ancient iconostases is a single-tier partition with 12 columns, divided into equal parts. Walls between columns. And on them are boards with icons of the holy apostles, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Savior and the archangels. This type of iconostasis is closest to the modern one.

In the 12th century, images of Jesus Christ and the Mother of God on the iconostasis became almost mandatory.

In Kievan Rus, iconostases immediately looked like wooden beams on which icons were attached. And in the 15th century, a three-tier iconostasis first appeared. And by the 17th century, the version with five tiers, recognized as classic, took hold.

Iconostases in our time. Kinds:

Today iconostases have a certain structure. And they are always decorated with icons. Moreover, their number, location and choice are not accidental. Each row has its own meaning.

Currently, iconostases are single-tiered, two-tiered, three-tiered, four-tiered and five-tiered. The 6th and 7th tier are very rare.

Each tier is decorated with icons of a certain rank. For example, a two-tiered one usually consists of icons of local significance and a Deesis tier. The third tier usually includes icons of the festive order. The fourth is the prophetic order. And the fifth is from the Old Testament.

There are 5 ranks in total:

  • local (icons with images of the saint after whom the church or city is named, as well as icons of the Mother of God and Christ)
  • Deesis (include icons of the Savior, archangels, apostles)
  • festive (images of church holidays, biblical scenes)
  • prophetic (usually prophets are depicted here)
  • Old Testament (depicts the Old Testament Trinity, or Noah, Adam)
  • The 4th and 5th rows with icons of the prophetic and Old Testament ranks are the least common on iconostases. The first row with the royal doors is mandatory.

However, the configuration may vary. There are no strict canons.

Currently, iconostases, richly decorated with exquisite carvings, have received a third purpose (not only zoning and presenting the most important icons to the eyes of parishioners, but also decorating the temple, its decor). The iconostasis is what first catches the eye in a church or temple, what attracts attention most of all. And it is precisely its beauty that is designed to evoke reverence and respect for everything divine and holy.
