About the Old Russian, Old Slavonic style, features:
What features characterize this style?
It's difficult to say for sure. After all, Russia is a multifaceted country; many eras and civilizations have left their mark on each new round of development of our state.
Designers have a distinction between the Russian hut style, the elegant mansion style and the “a la Rus” style. The first two are about Russian life, about log houses, about wooden floors, ceilings and walls, about a Russian stove, chests and a bench. Only in one case - a little simpler and rougher, and in the second - more elegant and richer. The third style “a la Russe” is rather a beautiful eclecticism, where the features of the original Russian style and elements that came to us from the West are mixed.
Nevertheless, all these directions have common features:
- Intentionally simple, rough finish.
- Abundance of wood.
- Ornaments (floral, national – originally Russian, we’ll talk more about carved ornaments below).
- Among furniture, preference is given to those made of wood and covered with abundant carvings.
- Icons, including carved ones.
- Colorful scarves, linen towels, balalaikas, nesting dolls, wicker napkins, painted boxes, embroidery, homespun rugs, samovars, black and white photographs and other antique things - everything that reminds us of past times.
- Carved pillars in the interior of the house and at the entrance (at the porch).
- Carved stairs with balusters and entry posts, made in the Old Russian style.
- Carved elements on the facade, porch, doors, shutters.
- And much more.
Particularly worth mentioning is wood carving. It is she who turns an ordinary chest, casket, pillar, balusters or bench into a product that reminds us of our ancestors, of our roots. Carving in the Old Russian style attracts with its quaintness, originality, and beauty. It creates the impression of a “fairy tale” and reminds us of the special warmth of our grandmothers’ houses. What are its differences from carvings made in other styles? More on this in the next section.
Features of Old Russian, Old Slavonic carving:
Rus' developed its own wood carving techniques early. There were entire schools and directions. Almost everyone mastered the art of carving to one degree or another. This is due, first of all, to the wide availability of wood, its distribution, its ease of processing and use in all spheres of life.
They built houses and temples from wood, made porches and stairs, made furniture and all household utensils.
Carving made it possible to give these products a more attractive appearance. Moreover, people believed that such decor was a kind of amulet and protected their homes.
Some did the carving themselves, while others invited master carvers. Carved patterns were on shutters, on trim, on cornices, on doors, on furniture, on pillars, etc.
In Russian culture, the following types of cutting were most often used:
- Flat dimpled (recesses forming an ornament).
- Carved (openwork carving, with through holes that form the decor).
- Relief (when the wood pattern protrudes above the background of the product, above the main plane).
- Sculptural (when the object is three-dimensional on all sides or only on one side).
Among the most popular ornaments and themes are:
- Plant patterns (rounded leaves with berries, ears of wheat, etc.)
- Geometric carving (combination of squares, rhombuses, tetrahedrons)
- Dots (patterns of dots are a popular decorative element in Old Russian culture)
- Images of household items of those years (for example, a wheel made of wood), figures of people and animals (most often bears, horses, roosters, pigeons, swans, deer).
- In some cases, the carvings could depict mythical creatures from Russian fairy tales (the most common example is the firebird).
- Carving in the Old Russian style is predominantly smooth, rounded lines and “openwork”.
