Gypsum on CNC. Features of working with gypsum. Models for machine tools.

In this article we will talk about gypsum as a material for making products on CNC machines. What features exist, what requirements must be observed when working with this material, what should be taken into account.

You can order 3D models for the manufacture of gypsum products on CNC or buy ready-made models on our website. We work for you.

About gypsum: material features

Gypsum is a natural sedimentary material. It is of mineral origin. In some cases it is classified as a soft stone. Gypsum contains sulfates, calcium, and water. The color of plaster is white. But it can have shades of gray, in some cases with a yellow or pink tint. It is often additionally coated with a marble or bronze coating, which allows you to obtain the product in the desired shade. Can be painted or gold plated.

An important advantage of gypsum is its availability; its moderate cost makes the material quite in demand in the manufacture of a wide variety of products.

Hard and polished, plaster resembles marble. It has a matte shine. Looks stylish and good. This makes it a popular finishing material, allowing it to be widely used in the manufacture of products of various types: sculptural compositions, bas-reliefs and high reliefs, architectural decorative elements, interior details, creating figurines, decor, stucco molding, columns and capitals, and so on.

In addition, gypsum is excellent for creating cast products. It hardens when mixed with water, and when hardened it forms a uniform microcrystalline structure, characterized by high hardness, which allows you to obtain durable, reliable products.

The same property allows gypsum to be processed using a CNC machine. However, the material remains quite soft and fragile. Therefore, when working with it, there are rules and regulations.

And often gypsum itself is used as a mold for pouring other materials.

Working with plaster, rules:

  • When working with gypsum, double-flute end mills of various diameters or conical engravers are used. The relief pattern is processed with a cutter with a ball head (with a diameter of no more than 1.5 mm)
  • It is desirable that the cutters be carbide (more suitable for working at elevated temperatures), since they will have to work without cooling liquid. This is due to the fact that when working with gypsum, it is not recommended to use a cooling liquid, since it can damage the gypsum workpiece.
  • Operating modes are selected moderate, medium, if necessary, the feed speed is reduced. The milling depth should not exceed the diameter of the cutter.
  • It is important to consider that when processing gypsum, a huge amount of dust arises, which requires carefully covering parts that could be damaged by it. In addition, it is necessary to provide an exhaust system. It is important to take into account the need for protection from fine dust.
  • Another problem that may arise when working with gypsum is the problem of securing fragile workpieces on the work table of a CNC milling machine. Clamps can damage the plaster. Therefore, it is recommended to use point-type vacuum mounting types.
  • Moreover, experts recommend using different types of cutters at different stages when processing gypsum. For example, on the roughing pass - end cutters with a diameter of 6 mm, at the stages of 3D processing - spherical ones with a diameter of 3 or 1.5 mm, on the final finishing - with the smallest cutter, with a diameter of 0.8 mm.

Gypsum as a casting material:

If gypsum is used as a material for casting, then the master model for it on a CNC machine can be made from any material, for example, wood or MDF.

When casting, it is important to avoid the formation of bubbles and cavities inside the gypsum blank. High-quality vibration or workpiece in a vacuum is required.

The use of casting is more appropriate in cases where the model includes many complex decorative elements and requires a large amount of manual refinement.
