Stl format: history, features, application.

STL is a format that allows a three-dimensional object designed on a computer to be converted from a 3D model into a program that indicates to the equipment the trajectory and depth of cutting the material.

Files of this format are most often encountered by CNC machine operators, designers, designers and PC users who are mastering 3D printers.

This extension has files loaded into a computer-controlled machine system.

This file contains a layer-by-layer display of the model and the order of creation of the product. Opens with special programs. In addition, it is possible to convert STL files. But first things first.

How the format came about:

The stl format was first introduced in 1987. The company 3D Systems, which began its journey in developing three-dimensional printing technology, was in search of a solution for presenting three-dimensional models of products that would subsequently be manufactured on special machines. And she turned to Albert Consulting group for help. Therefore, the first algorithm for layer-by-layer development of models belongs to these corporations.

Published over 30 years ago, STL was free code. The development company took this step with the intention of making the format widespread and literally nationwide. And so it happened. Among the existing developers of CAD software products who create professional software for 3D modeling and design, almost all have adopted the new product and integrated it with their developments.

STL today:

A model file for stereolithography (one of the first rapid prototyping technologies, which appeared in 1984) is an abbreviation of the English term Stereolithography (stl).

Each figure is represented as a set of triangles connected by vertices. The more triangles, the more realistic the image is, and the more uniform the surface. A small number of triangles give a pixilation effect, only not in two-dimensional, but in three-dimensional implementation.

Today, files with this extension can be represented in two types:

  • binary code (binary) – the file specifies the coordinates of the vertices of the triangles and the orientation vector of the normal. The latter are written at will, since in most cases the program code is written based on the right-hand rule. Additionally, the color of the product may be indicated;
  • text – only the coordinates of the vertices and the facet vector are specified in the file in text form.

The text file is suitable for small models. Its advantage is a simple and understandable programming language. A binary file is best used for three-dimensional models. The difference in weight is almost double.

The syntax used in the file also plays an important role. There are new and old syntax or standard and non-standard options. Some programs can only read and work with files written using classic syntax, while a number of more modern developments can easily understand new, simplified code.

How to open a 3D object model file:

There are special utilities for working with the STL format. A number of CAD programs can also be used. The text file can be opened in a simple notepad to make adjustments. If necessary, a text file can be converted into a binary one using special utilities or the same CAD programs. In most cases, the technology of exporting and saving in the required format is used.

The most common software products that can work with .STL are:

  • ADEM CAD.
  • AutoCAD;
  • Autodesk Inventor CAD;
  • Blender 3D;
  • CADbro;
  • CATIA;
  • Cheetah3D;

  • Parametric Technology Creo;
  • Rapidform Explorer;
  • Rhinoceros;
  • ShareCAD;
  • T-FLEX CAD;
